Key points of the sheet

  1. Healthcare is expensive. It is largely paid for by the social contributions of people who work.
  2. Universal health protection (PUMa) guarantees that health costs are covered. It applies to anyone who works or lives in France in a stable and regular way and is registered with health insurance (assurance maladie).
  3. PUMa lets everyone access care, even after losing a job. It reimburses consultations and medicines, at least at the basic rate: it is the basic cover.
  4. Complementary cover, also called a mutuelle, adds to the basic cover. It is not compulsory, but it is recommended.
  5. Every private-sector employer must offer you complementary health cover. The employer can pay part of its cost.
  6. The complementary reimbursement depends on the level of cover you choose. The members of your household can also be covered.
  7. The Complémentaire Santé Solidaire (C2S) helps people with low incomes. Depending on your income, it can be free or cost less than €1 per day.
  8. With the C2S, you do not pay upfront for certain care, under conditions. If you benefit from it, all members of your household do too.
