The 504 French civic exam questions as open data, with their source
This dataset holds 504 knowledge questions of the French civic exam, each with its theme, the Ministry of the Interior lists it is on, the source cited and the day it was read, as CSV and JSON. The Ministry publishes its lists without answers: the options, the right answer and the explanation are written by Hexaciv from the cited sheet. Licence Ouverte 2.0, version 1.0 of 24 October 2026.
Model-written, not yet read by a native reader.
What is in the dataset
504 questions, 190 on the "multi-year residence card" list (CSP), 208 on the "resident card" list (CR), 242 also on the naturalisation list. Questions per theme:
| Theme | Questions |
|---|---|
| Principles and values of the Republic | 89 |
| Institutional and political system | 108 |
| Rights and duties | 91 |
| History, geography and culture | 135 |
| Living in French society | 81 |
The fields
The CSV has one row per question; the JSON adds the full English and Arabic and the reason each wrong choice is wrong.
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
id | Stable question identifier (K-DRO-001…). |
theme, listes | One of the Ministry's 5 themes; the lists the question is on: CSP, CR, NAT (naturalisation). |
enonce_ministere_fr | The wording as the Ministry's list gives it (CSP and CR lists). Empty for questions that are only on the naturalisation list. |
type_source, editeur_source, titre_source, url_source | The page that gives the answer: a sheet of the Ministry of the Interior's civic training site, or another public page (Service-Public, Légifrance, Sénat…). |
phrase_source_fr | The sentence of the source, word for word, when it is verified. Empty for 9 questions whose sentence is not verified yet. |
date_lecture | The day we read the source. |
question_fr, option_a_fr to option_d_fr, reponse_lettre, reponse_fr, explication_fr | Question, four choices, right answer and explanation, written by Hexaciv from the source. |
question_en, reponse_en, question_ar, reponse_ar | The same in English and Arabic. The exam is in French: the French text is the reference. |
relecture_arabe | Review level of the Arabic text: "sampled" = read on a sample. |
What comes from the Ministry, what comes from us
The Ministry of the Interior publishes, on its civic training site, the list of knowledge questions for each version of the exam, multi-year residence card and resident card, without answers (lists read on 21 October 2026).
For a question on those lists, the Ministry's wording is in the enonce_ministere_fr column. Everything else, the options, the right answer, the explanation and the translations, is written by Hexaciv from the cited sheet. It is therefore not the Ministry's own answer: when in doubt, the cited sheet decides.
139 questions are only on the naturalisation list, which we read from a PDF relayed by a third-party site (the Ministry's page did not answer). Their wording is not copied: only our own wording is in the file.
Licence and what we checked
Licence Ouverte 2.0 (Etalab). What we checked on 24 October 2026: the legal notice of the civic training site says "Sauf mention explicite de propriété intellectuelle détenue par des tiers, les contenus de ce site sont proposés sous licence etalab-2.0" (unless a third party is named as rights holder, the site's content is under etalab-2.0). We publish the part that is ours the same way.
46 questions cite a public page other than the Ministry's: we take one sentence from it, with its address. If you reuse those sentences in bulk, check the licence of each source page.
You may copy, modify and republish the dataset, commercially too, as long as you credit the source and the version date.
How to cite
Use this line, with a link to this page:
Source: Hexaciv (hexaciv.com/donnees), based on interieur.gouv.fr
You may add the version: "version 1.0 of 24 October 2026".
Use it with the embeddable test
The same questions as a test you can put on your site: the free embeddable test (10 knowledge questions drawn at random, no cookie, no account). The dataset gives the questions and their source, the test lets people sit them.
Version log
Changes to the exam rules are dated and sourced in the change log; when one of them touches a question or an answer, we republish the file and add a line here.
| Version | Date | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 | 24 October 2026 | First release: 504 knowledge questions with the source, the source sentence when it is verified and the read date, as CSV and JSON. |
